"Dishonored", Arkane Studios’ steampunk stealth-action game, is selling better than expected, prompting publisher Bethesda Softworks to consider expanding the game into an on-going series.
“We clearly have a new franchise,” Bethesda PR man Pete Hines told Destructoid.
“I can tell you that Dishonored is far exceeding our sales expectations, which is really cool considering it’s a new [intellectual property] facing a host of well-established franchises this quarter,” he continued.
The game got another boost over the Thanksgiving weekend, which is the traditional opening of the holiday shopping season. “We did terrific numbers again this weekend, both in stores and on Steam, where Dishonored was listed as the number one selling title over the weekend,” Hines said, noting also that the game is selling well overseas.
It’s worth pointing out that Dishonored was heavily discounted during Steam’s Thanksgiving sale – the price was cut by 50%, to $29.99. With the cost of game development rising, it’s unfortunately never a guarantee that strong sales indicate large profits for a company.
In our own review, Jason Cipriano says that Dishonored “could be the last great first-person shooter of this generation that’s based on a new property,” and Bethesda obviously feels confident moving forward with the series: “Dunwall City Trials,” a challenged based DLC package, will be available on December 11.
